“Voyage to the Oreshek fortress”

In this voyage we accelerate to a maximum possible speed to overcome the turbulent current of the Neva, and pass this full-flowing river right up to its source in Lake Ladoga, where the fortress of Oreshek stands

On an island near the shores of Lake Ladoga stands an ancient fortress. It has seen so many generations that it is hard to imagine. Those whom we study in history textbooks are its relatives. Events that someone may consider fairy tales for this place are as real as what happened yesterday. This is the Oreshek fortress.

We will travel along the Neva River out of St. Petersburg, passing through the lush center, the working suburbs, country mansions and places of military glory to finally disembark in Oreshek, stretch our legs, admire the views of the surrounding expanse, and listen to the stories from the past of this iconic place.

Oreshek Fortress is the key to the Neva River

Its walls were first protected by the Novgorodians, and then by the Swedes. Until Peter the Great came to cut a window to Europe.

And then it became a prison!

Beyond the Nut is the vast Lake Ladoga

The fortress was an important hub on the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks

The Royal Tower is the only thing that recalls the Swedish period in the fortress' history.

Behind the tower is Lake Ladoga, the largest freshwater reservoir in Europe.

In 1698, the Swedes completely rebuilt the Royal Tower, and four years later Peter recaptured the fortress from them.

On this great journey we will go from the city center up the Neva River to Lake Ladoga. Here is the fortress of Oreshek, aka Shlisselburg, which is Swedish for "key city". This place became for Peter the Great the key to the Neva and then to the Baltic Sea.

The first fortress was built on the island back in 1323. Back then it was not one island, but three — with canals between them. The Novgorodians built the fortress to strengthen their control over these territories and to defend themselves from Swedish aggression. They succeded doing it till 1612, when the Swedes took the fortress by force. The fortress remained under their rule for the next 90 years. They called it Noteburg, or "Nut City".

The troops led by Peter I took the fortress in 1702, as a result of a tiring, desperate and bloody 13-hour battle. At the most desperate moment, when a few soldiers rushed to the river, Prince Golitsyn ordered all available boats to be pushed away from the shore to discourage even thoughts of retreat. On the other bank Lieutenant Menshikov started cathing those boats and putting reinforcements in for help. Seeing such persistence, the commandant of the fortress decided to beat the drum and surrender. The assault stopped at once and a negotiator was sent to the Swedes. On the same day the surrender of Noteburg was signed. Peter then said: "it is true that this nut was very hard, but, thank God, it was happily cracked".

Going up the Neva River and looking at the eye-pleasing views of pompous buildings, beautiful wooded banks and industrial enterprises it is hard to think that for many hundreds of people this way was their last. Already in 1722, 20 years after the capture, the Shlisselburg fortress was turned into a prison. Prisoners sent here were sentenced to life imprisonment or death penalty. The sentence was carried out in the fortress.

Despite this dark period, which lasted almost 200 years, the Nut Fortress became a heroic bridgehead, thanks to which the Nazis failed to cut the Road of Life. Fierce battles were fought in this area throughout the war, and almost as many shells were dropped on the fortress as on the entire besieged Leningrad.
