“Voyage to the forts of Kronstadt”
A great adventure in which we'll cross the Gulf of Finland at speed and reach the dam that protects St. Petersburg from floods. Here, gigantic forts protrude from the water, once protecting St. Petersburg from attacks from the sea. We'll learn more about the forts, walk around Kronstadt, and see the pearls of this sailors' city.
A voyage to Kronstadt by boat is not only an opportunity to learn more about history but also an excellent opportunity to enjoy sea views and fresh air.
Even at the very beginning of St. Petersburg's foundation, the Swedes still owned the Gulf of Finland (and, concurrently, access to the Baltic Sea). The Russian Empire, led by Peter I, recaptured Kotlin Island from the Swedes, built the Kronstadt fortress on it (translated as 'Crown Fortress'), and constructed forts with cannons around the island directly in the water. We'll pay attention to all this beauty in our voyage and tour of the forts.
Over the centuries of the Russian Empire's history, the importance of St. Petersburg grew significantly. Indeed, from a settlement on a swamp to a sparkling European capital. Along with this, the number of forts in Kronstadt also increased. Counting only those that stood in the water, there were 17!
Kronstadt itself kept pace and became the main base of the Baltic Fleet, a center for shipbuilding, repair, and invention. It was also a customs office and cargo port. Perhaps ships would have been happy to unload directly in St. Petersburg, but to reduce their draft and avoid running aground, part of the goods had to be unloaded in Kronstadt. Therefore, some things on the island were very cheap (what was unloaded here, obviously), and some were inappropriately expensive (what was brought from St. Petersburg, of course). Most of the Baltic Fleet was based in Kronstadt. And for good reason, as ships could be safely left in the local man-made harbors even when the ice set in. For almost 300 years, Kronstadt could only be reached by water! Until 1984, when they built the first wing of the dam, which was completed in 2008. Since then, St. Petersburg has rarely experienced floods. Let's repeat the time-tested sea route, get to Kronstadt by boat, and see what the City of Military Glory is worth. On a snow-white ship, we'll rush to this cradle of Russian seafaring and see everything: from sea forts to the crosses of the Naval Cathedral.
In about an hour by boat and 1.5-2 hours by yacht, we'll cross the Gulf of Finland and arrive in Kronstadt. On our way to the harbor, we'll pass the forts of Kronstadt by boat, and our guide will tell you more about them and help you understand what specialization each of them had and how their purpose changed over time.
Now in Kronstadt, the construction of the 'Island of Forts' park is in full swing, and for this purpose, they have even begun a massive reconstruction of the forts. Fort Alexander I, also known as the 'Plague Fort,' has finally been cleaned of soot and given a roof, Fort Peter I is gradually being equipped, and Fort Kronschlot is being restored (by the way, it was on its site that the first fort in Kronstadt stood). During our excursion of the forts, we'll see how the work is progressing, approach the forts closely, and disembark in Kronstadt, walk around the city, and mark the main artifacts of a bygone era on the map.
A water excursion to the forts of Kronstadt by boat is a unique opportunity to discover little-known pages of history and enjoy the magnificent nature of the Baltic region. In addition to the excursion of the forts, we'll visit the St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, see Peter's Dock – a grandiose dry dock and unique engineering project. The ship would sail into the dock, and within a couple of hours, all the water would be drained from the dock. From that moment, the vessel was ready for repair. But how to drain water from the Gulf of Finland? We'll find out. And Kronstadt is also:
▪︎ The birthplace of radio
▪︎ The location of the absolute zero elevation, from which all heights and depths are measured, and even space flights are calculated
▪︎ The birthplace of mine weapons
▪︎ The birthplace of the first icebreaker (1865)
▪︎ The starting point of the first round-the-world expedition
▪︎ The first city in Russia equipped with a water supply
▪︎ The place of the first submarine test in 1834
We'll touch on all these stories in our voyage. Shall we rush?
St.Petersburg
We meet at the pier. We get acquainted, take our seats and leave.
Heading to Kronstadt
We turn on the first space speed and famously get to Kronstadt.
"Marine Facade" Port
The city's tourist harbor, built on reclaimed land. Cruise liners and the largest yachts come here.
Forts of Kronstadt
Kronstadt is surrounded from the North and from the South by forts sticking straight out of the water. They were built to protect the capital of that time, St. Petersburg. Now the forts find a different purpose. Which one? We'll find out!
Fort "Count Milutin"
Also known as "Southern Battery No. 3," it was built from 1865 to 1879. The fort was won at auction by some great enthusiasts who are now restoring its historical appearance.
Dam
A gigantic structure from one shore of the Gulf of Finland to the other. The second part of the dam (the one that lets ships through, which we'll see up close) was only completed in 2011. It protects St. Petersburg from floods. If only everything were built so well!
Fort "Alexander I"
The Russian "Fort Boyard." A grim-looking fortress, one of a series of Southern Kronstadt forts. After "Alexander I" became technically obsolete for defense, they developed a plague vaccine here.
Fort "Peter I"
One of the formidable forts protecting the Southern shipping channel.
Walking around Kronstadt
We walk around the city, looking at the Winter Wharf where Baltic Fleet vessels are based. We visit the Naval Cathedral - Kronstadt's central attraction. We also reach Peter's Dock - a unique structure completed in 1752 for repairing several ships at once.
Winter wharf
A mooring for Baltic Fleet ships, established back in the time of Peter the Great.
Naval Cathedral of St.Nicholas
The largest cathedral in Kronstadt. The last one built in the Russian Empire before the Revolution.
Water Tower
A water tower that looks like a temple or chapel. Before the revolution, they could do even more remarkable things!
Powder Fort
A building constructed on the outskirts of the city right in the water. This was where gunpowder was stored.
We return to St. Petersburg
Get comfortable and get ready to enjoy the ride back. We rush back to the city to the music and the sound of the wind.
300th Anniversary Park
A park with a large beach and a view of the Gazprom skyscraper.
Gazprom Arena
St. Petersburg's coolest stadium. Among the top 10 most expensive in the world.
St.Petersburg
We moor in the same place we started from. We thank each other and say goodbye happily.

FAQ
If you have a corporate event or a large party, it's best to book it a month or more in advance. If you are planning a simple outing, book as soon as you think of it. The closer to the date, the fewer the options available.
