“Voyage to Peterhof”
Peterhof was designed to be visited from the water. The first time it happened was in 1723, when Peter gathered guests to celebrate the signing of peace treaty with Sweden. Since then, the main maritime residence has grown a lot: new fountains have been completed, palaces have been settled, neighboring parks have been joined, even a railroad has been built to it. Now it is one of the most popular attractions in St. Petersburg. But we remember how it all started — with water!
What is an individual tour to Peterhof? Here we could describe the entire history of Peterhof, from the moment when Peter found a quiet harbor during a storm in the Gulf of Finland, to how during his daughter Elizabeth's reign the palace was enlarged several times, and how each subsequent owner added something of their own. Added, but did not remake, it should be noted.
Instead, it's enough to state one obvious fact. Peterhof is Peter's brainchild, his project from beginning to end. So detailed that even after the ruler's death, his descendants had instructions in hand about what trees to plant where and what to build where. All descendants treated Peterhof as a monument to Peter the First's willpower and genius, who created Europe's most luxurious residence from an ordinary wooded shore, and did so before he even finished the 21-year Northern War with Sweden! Therefore, the additions were in the format of "let's add a colonnade here," "let's install a fountain in the far corner," or "let's replace wood with marble."
Truly, Peterhof is a spectacle and feast for the eyes. I don't know what my reaction to THIS could have been if I didn't live in St. Petersburg, but even I feel pleasant inspiration every time I see the Grand Palace. Imagine, we're heading to Peterhof by boat, first we leave St. Petersburg behind, building silhouettes on the horizon become hazy, we're racing across the Gulf of Finland. The shores are still visible, but you already understand that here water is an element to be reckoned with. When you reach Peterhof by water, you first see miniature houses with white fencing by the water, and behind them the towering church building – this is the Peter and Paul Cathedral, built in Peterhof in 1903. At this moment you already sense the scale of the place.
When you finally step on land, you're greeted by a canal stretching straight to the palace, framed by fountains and rows of trees. Of course, you immediately head there, and rightly so. After all, this is the most notable place – here stands the 21-meter "Samson" Fountain, and behind it the enormous steps of the Grand Cascade, which consists of smaller fountains. Above stands the palace. You hear the sound of falling water, gold gleams everywhere. "Am I not dreaming?" you think. It's quite possible that guests of these places thought the same in the old days. Back then the residence was closed to visitors, and you could only get here by invitation. We've already bought our "invitation," so we'll explore the entire park. The Lower Park extends on both sides of the sea canal, and each part has its own atmosphere. On one side you're met by trimmed linden trees, extended alleys, ponds, lots of open spaces and sky; on the other – tall trees that seem to have grown here of their own will and fountains hidden somewhere behind the branches.
What am I getting at? Well, basically, we'll be happy to share our delight with you on our individual tour to Peterhof. The Grand Cascade
The main fountain complex of Peterhof. This marble staircase, framed by golden sculptures and gushing fountains, is always the center of attention.
The Hermitage Pavilion
The first Hermitage pavilion in Russia, where you could eat alone without fear of prying ears and eyes.
Monplaisir Palace
Petrovsky's "Palace by the Sea". The emperor's dream come true, fulfilled in his characteristic laconic and modest sophistication.
Marley's Palace
Petrovsky Palace between two ponds, where the tsar kept his treasures and received important guests without unnecessary ears, is a real "floating" a masterpiece of architecture.
We return to the base in Petersburg
